Amy Nisenson

Amy’s consulting expertise includes strategic planning, board development/governance work, board and staff meeting facilitation, organizational development, and resource development. Her over 30 years as a senior philanthropy professional includes work on both sides of philanthropy- as a nonprofit executive and development professional and as a corporate and foundation grant maker. Amy brings her unique experiences in both asking and giving along with strategic thinking, sensible fiscal management, effective communication and facilitation to her consulting work. Amy is also a Certified Governance Trainer with Board Source and is trained in nonprofit Board education.

Amy also teaches classes in nonprofit management including grant writing, navigating support from corporations and foundations, and board development at many universities and programs throughout the State. Prior to her current work, Amy served as Vice President and Community Affairs Manager for Wachovia Corporation from 2005-2008, covering the three-state Mid-Atlantic Region of Virginia—Virginia, Maryland, and D.C.

Amy’s consulting practice is rooted in a strong passion for the nonprofit community. All work is geared to helping a nonprofit build its organizational capacity working within a team approach of strong partnerships between board and staff. Amy combines her professional and personal experiences with best practices to help nonprofits make informed decisions and build internal processes to become stronger, more stable organizations.

Amy King

Amy King is a nonprofit management professional with more than 15 years of experience in the sector. She served as the Executive Director of Rebuilding Together of Richmond (RTR) for more than a decade, taking it from a small volunteer run grassroots organization. She has a decade long relationship with Amy Nisenson who initially consulted with her at RTR. Their consulting relationship developed into their current experience of partnering to provide nonprofit clients with a full array of services to strengthen and direct their organizations. They’ve worked together on dozens of engagements over the last 6 years. Amy received the 120-hour Nonprofit Management Certificate offered by Nonprofit Learning Point through The Community Foundation. Amy has a B.S. Information Resource Management from George Mason University.

 Her work with Amy Nisenson Consulting leverages her data-oriented training and first career as a software developer. Amy has a particular affinity for older adults and living fully. She regularly offers her time and talent to support elders in her family and community. She’s a volunteer for numerous organizations and initiatives, most recently the Henrico Medical Reserve Corp during the pandemic; Inner Work Center for Mindfulness practice and related events, Virginia Supportive Housing as a member of their development team, Open Table Ministry, and her church River Road United Methodist Church.

Amy and her husband Steve came to Richmond in 1987 and raised their two sons here. They enjoy tennis, hiking, traveling, cooking, and visiting wineries and craft breweries with great companions.


Karen La Forge

Karen La Forge is a nonprofit management professional with more than 25 years of experience in the sector. She served as Director of Development and Executive Director for several nonprofits. Serving as Executive Director for The READ Center, Karen helped the organization regain its financial stability, build community awareness through marketing and communications, significantly expand programming, and effectively respond to the pandemic. Karen met Amy Nisenson when she taught a governance class and has contracted with her to support the Agriculture in the Classroom and READ Center board of directors and conduct strategic planning. Amy and Karen have teamed up to conduct several training sessions on Strategic Planning.

As Karen begins her consulting career, it is a natural fit to join Amy’s team. Karen holds a B.S. and MBA from James Madison University. She also had certificates in Nonprofit Management and Nonprofit Marketing from the University of Richmond School of Philanthropy.  Her work with Amy Nisenson Consulting will include nonprofit governance, strategic planning/management, resource development, marketing and communications, and interim executive director services utilizing her many years and wide variety of experience.

Karen moved to Richmond in 1990 and her two sons were born and raised here. She is an avid reader - often two or three books at a time, and loves to hike, travel, and spend time with her family.
